I sing of Artemis, whose shafts are of gold, who cheers on the hounds, the pure maiden, shooter of stags, who delights in archery, own sister to Apollo with the golden sword. Over the shadowy hills and windy peaks she draws her golden bow, rejoicing in the chase, and sends out grievous shafts. The tops of the high mountains tremble and the tangled wood echoes awesomely with the outcry of beasts: earthquakes and the sea also where fishes shoal.
Callimachus then tells[42] how Artemis spent her girlhood seeking out the things she would need to be a huntress, and how she obtained her bow and arrows from the isle of Lipara, where Hephaestus and the Cyclopes worked. While Oceanus' daughters were initially fearful, the young Artemis bravely approached and asked for a bow and arrows. He goes on to describe how she visited Pan, god of the forest, who gave her seven female and six male hounds. She then captured six golden-horned deer to pull her chariot. Artemis practiced archery first by shooting at trees and then at wild game.[42]
Hounds Of The Blade English 210
Multiple versions of the Actaeon myth survive, though many are fragmentary. The details vary but at the core, they involve the great hunter Actaeon whom Artemis turns into a stag for a transgression, and who is then killed by hunting dogs.[48][49] Usually, the dogs are his own, but no longer recognize their master. Occasionally they are said to be the hounds of Artemis.
Various tellings diverge in terms of the hunter's transgression: sometimes merely seeing the virgin goddess naked, sometimes boasting he is a better hunter than she,[50] or even merely being a rival of Zeus for the affections of Semele. Apollodorus, who records the Semele version, notes that the ones with Artemis are more common.[51] According to Lamar Ronald Lacey's The Myth of Aktaion: Literary and Iconographic Studies, the standard modern text on the work, the most likely original version of the myth portrays Actaeon as the hunting companion of the goddess who, seeing her naked in her sacred spring, attempts to force himself on her. For this hubris, he is turned into a stag and devoured by his own hounds. However, in some surviving versions, Actaeon is a stranger who happens upon Artemis.
Euripides, coming in a bit later, wrote in the Bacchae that Actaeon was torn to shreds and perhaps devoured by his "flesh-eating" hunting dogs when he claimed to be a better hunter than Artemis.[54] Like Aeschylus, he does not mention Actaeon being deer-shaped when that happens. Callimachus writes that Actaeon chanced upon Artemis bathing in the woods, and she caused him to be devoured by his own hounds for the sacrilege, and he makes no mention of transformation into a deer either.[55]
FLUTE, as Thisbe Asleep, my love? What, dead, my dove? O Pyramus, arise! Speak, speak. Quite dumb? Dead? Dead? A tomb345 Must cover thy sweet eyes. These lily lips, This cherry nose, These yellow cowslip cheeks Are gone, are gone!350 Lovers, make moan; His eyes were green as leeks. O Sisters Three, Come, come to me With hands as pale as milk.355 Lay them in gore, Since you have shore With shears his thread of silk. Tongue, not a word! Come, trusty sword,360 Come, blade, my breast imbrue!Thisbe stabs herself. And farewell, friends. Thus Thisbe ends. Adieu, adieu, adieu.Thisbe falls.
Indeed the chief of the Geats trusted eagerlyin his proud power, and the protection of the Measurer. Then he undid his iron byrnie, his helmet from his head, giving his adorned sword, best of all iron blades,to a serving-man, and ordered him to hold that battle-gear.Then the good man spoke some boasting words,Beowulf the Geat, before he climbed into bed: (ll. 669-76)
Then the blade of Halfdane he gave to Beowulf, and a golden ensign as recompense for his victory,an ornamented battle-flag, a helmet and a mail-coat.Many famous treasured swords were seento be borne before that warrior. Beowulf received themgraciously on the floor. He had no need to be ashamedbefore the fighters on account of those costly giftsI have never learned of many men giving anotherin a very friendly way, four such treasures, garnished with gold, upon the ale-benches.A crest contained it from without, woven with wiresabout the roof of the helmet, that head-protectionso that the well-filed relic, shower-hardened, could notgrievously harm it, when the shieldsmanmust wade into the gruesome fray. (ll. 1020-34)
Nor could I use Hrunting any bit in the fight, although that weapon should be availing. But the Sovereign of Men granted to methat I should see upon the wall, hanging fairlya giant elder-blade. Haste guided me,desperate for allies, to draw that weapon. (ll. 1659-64)
Then I slew in that conflict, when I was given a moment, the guardian of that house. Then that hooped blade, that battle-bill burned up, when that blood burst out,the hottest of war-sweat. I carried the hilt from there, from my enemies, avenging those dastardly deeds,death-killing of the Danes, as was appropriate. (ll. 1665-70)
Guard yourself against this killing malice, my dear Beowulf, best of men, and choose the better part, the enduring good. Care nothing for pride, famous champion! Now the profits of your powerlast a short time. Too soon there will bedisease or the blade to deprive you of strength,or else the clutch of flame or the welling of wateror the grip of the sword or the flight of the spearor terrible old age and the brightness of your eyewill darken and diminish. All at once it shall bethat death conquers you, noble warrior. (ll. 1758-68)
I merited those treasures in warfare, which he gave me, as was granted mewith the illumined blade. He allowed me land,a home-joyful place. Nor was there ever any needto go seeking the Gepidae or the Spear-Danesor the Swedes for an inferior war-fighter,to purchase them with treasure. (ll. 2490-96)
Some of the Hounds tracked Kiska and Jheval through Shadow before trapping them within a crevasse in the rocks. The canny hounds laid in wait for their prey to exit, but ultimately gave up, possibly after being stung once too often by their quarry's attacks.[66]
He wields the sword Angbar (アングバール),[Note 2], one of the weapons forged through Divergent Laws and handed to him by Ouroboros' Grandmaster. It is a large curved blade of black and red color, sporting several spiked protrusions. When McBurn channels more power into it, it emits black flames with a purple glow around the eye.
Master Swordsman: Kitty is highly trained at swordplay, especially that used by Japanese samurai and wielding Japanese blades. The Silver Samurai has stated that her skills may surpass those of Wolverine, and she was able to briefly hold her own against the Samurai in a somewhat staged battle.[139]
THE HARPYIAI (Harpies) were the spirits (daimones) of sudden, sharp gusts of wind. They were known as the hounds of Zeus and were despatched by the god to snatch away (harpazô) people and things from the earth. Sudden, mysterious dissappearances were often attributed to the Harpyiai.
Pseudo-Hyginus, Fabulae 19 :"But he [Phineus], since he revealed the deliberations of the gods, was blinded by Jove [Zeus], and Jove set over him the Harpyiae (Harpies), who are called the hounds of Jove, to take the food from his lips. When the Argonauts came there and asked him to show them the way, he said he would show them if they would free him from the punishment. Then Zetes and Calais, sons of Aquilo [Boreas the North Wind] and Orithyia, who are said to have had wings on head and feet, drove the Harpyiae to the Strophades Islands, and freed Phineus from the punishment."
At the Fist of the First Men, Sam, Grenn and Edd are foraging for fuel when they hear three horn blasts; the warning call for White Walkers. The three run back to the Fist. Sam is left behind, caught in a sudden blizzard. Seeing shadowy figures moving through the blowing snow, Sam hides behind a rock and watches as dozens of wights walk past him, led by a White Walker riding an undead horse-wight. Sam cowers in fear, but the White Walker seemingly ignores him. Raising a spear with a blade of ice, the creature gives a piercing shriek, and the army of wights and White Walkers, numbering several hundred, advances on the Fist.
